Senior High School

English

at

École McTavish

Essentially, the English Language Arts curriculum promotes the six ways that humans communicate with one another.  Here are the six strands of communication that are explored and evaluated in each ELA course:

Scholarly words that resonated with me and challenged me.

To support the Alberta curriculum for senior English Language Arts, we promote the following in the classroom:

  • peer discussion to promote critical thinking

  • authentic learning opportunities

  • engaging and relevant texts

  • cross-curricular connections (Maths, Sciences, Social Studies)

  • metacognition (understanding and using personal learning strengths and styles)

  • improving organization in communication (to prepare for: college, university, the workplace)

So, who's teaching my kid?

My name is Janice Doucette, and I love teaching English!  I am in my tenth year teaching for the Fort McMurray Public School District, and this year marks my sixth year with École McTavish.

McTavish is an amazing school, and I am an active Marauder: I am heavily involved with the dramatic production each year, and I attend as many athletics and arts events as possible.

I am an English Language Arts specialist; I obtained my undergraduate degree in English and Sociology from Western University (BA, 2006), my professional degree from Western University (BEd, 2009), a masters degree in Leadership and Research from the University of Calgary (MEd, 2014) and a masters (professional) degree in Literacies from Western University (MPEd, 2018).

I have successfully taught each of the senior English courses.  I am a goal-driven educator and I use current research to inform my teaching practice . . . but I also like to have some fun in the classroom.  I look forward to navigating the curriculum with your son or daughter and helping all students to achieve their best!

Separate pages in this website are dedicated to each ELA course; just use the navigation bar at the top of this page.  I am available throughout the year for support--I ask that students approach me to arrange for additional and specific help.  The best way to contact me is via email: janice.doucette@fmpsd.ab.ca
